Being a Councillor
One amongst many things that stood out about the comments on being a Councillor was this paragraph: 'Being a councillor is also a great way to gain political experience and useful skills in public speaking, debating and problem solving. Serving councillors are a broad mix of people from the local community. New councillors are good news. They mean fresh ideas and fresh enthusiasm, and that will be good for your council and your local area. By becoming a councillor, you really can make a difference to your local community.' Should I laugh or cry? Councillors in Flitwick only appear to come alive for debates about weeds, yellow lines and potholes - when it comes to items of real importance they are just nodded through on the say so of the chosen few as the humdrum, repetitive council minutes will show with the nodding through of this report and that report. Where is the debate on these held - perhaps it fits the bill if they are discussed by a few down the pub (public speaking?)or even in the Flitwick Club - ahh I see now why you have to join the conservative party to take part in local government!! Maybe.

Although it can only be a good thing that local councils must be more open and transparent, how are the public supposed to make the councils accountable? What are we to do if we are not happy with the expenditure or policies or even their expenses? Are we to march on our parish halls in protest - waving banners? How will that change anything. Waiting for an election to vote them out just isn't the answer.

Maybe

And I thought Mentmore was uniquely corrupt within The Three Counties! Well, we live and learn, and if anyone wishes to see the infamous deeds which led to the much celebrated collapse and mass resignation of Mentmore Parish Council I recommend MentmoreParishCouncil.com
More power to your elbow!
